Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is a spectacular lodge situated on the edge of the crater. It is regularly featured in décor magazines such as Architectural Digest. Although it has a total of 30 suites, it is divided into three separate camps. Each camp has a sitting and dining room, an outdoor dining area and viewing decks. The sitting rooms have woven banana bark ceilings and are adorned with hand-beaded chandeliers, carved and gilded wall plaques, brocade sofas, Persian carpets, candles and bowls of red roses. The domed dining room with fireplace, crystal, silver and massive wooden platters makes dining quite special. The food is excellent and offers both local and international cuisine. Some might consider it over the top and the description given by the lodge owners as “ Maasai meets Versailles” is accurate.
The lodge is divided into three separate camps – North Camp (12 suites), South Camp (12 suites) and Tree Camp (6 suites) – each with breathtaking views of the Crater below. Each suite has a private deck, fireplace, en suite bathroom and exclusive butler service.
Inspired in design by the Maasai mud-and-stick manyatta (homestead), the luxurious and romantic suites are perched on stilts on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater. Each suite is individually styled with panelled walls and wooden floors, silk curtains, antique and colonial style furnishings, grand chandeliers and African art. The bedroom, sitting room and en suite bathroom have floor-to-ceiling glass windows, overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater below. The staff ratio is three staff to each guest and your personal butler will bring you tea in bed, stoke your fireplace and draw your bath and look after your every need. Staying in this lodge is a unique experience and is both excellent for honey-mooners or those wanting to chat to others over a drink or over dinner. The staff deals with every need and are both sensitive and highly professional.
