The Serena lodge is also on the crater edge perfect for a Ngorongoro crater safari. The 75 rooms all have excellent views. The Hotel has opted for a cave-like theme which works in a hollywoodish sort of way but is really over the top in our view. The Lodge camouflaged in river-stone covered with creepers does blend in quite well with the surroundings and the various areas of the lodge are linked by rope-lashed timber walkways.
The cave theme is carried throughout the Hotel with interiors with flaming wall-lanterns set on volcanic boulders decorated by iron spears, prehistoric wall motifs and local tribal artefacts.
This is a large lodge but what it looses in intimacy it makes up for in professionalism. The service is good, everything works and there is even air-conditioning, even though totally unnecessary, in the rooms. The rooms themselves are large with generous bathrooms and all the luxuries you would expect from a first class hotel and with a large terrace overlooking the crater below.
