Tarangire is located about 65 miles (100km) southwest of Arusha, to the south of the large open grass plains of southern Maasailand and southeast of Lake Manyara. It extends over 2600 km2 of wilderness in the Rift Valley. It is part of the broader migratory system and is one of the best places in Africa to see elephants with herds reaching to as many as 500 animals.
Tarangire also has unique vegetation with panoramas of open savannah grasslands dotted with acacia woodland and large Baobab trees and termite hills and crossed by the beautiful Tarangire River.
This is a year-round park but in the dry season it becomes a refuge for many migratory animals (elephants, wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, eland and buffalo). The game viewing is excellent as the animals cluster around the rapidly shrinking water reserves.
The park is also excellent in the green season and we have seen large numbers of animals giving birth in this park. Everything becomes very lush with wild flowers and butterflies. The bird life for which the park is famous is particularly rich at this time with more than 550 species in the park. The only months to avoid are during the heavy rainfalls of April and May.
There are several options for accommodation in this park. The classic camp is the Tarangire Safari Lodge, which has a spectacular site in a bowl overlooking the plain and the river below. There is also a Tarangire Sopa Lodge and just outside the Park Tarangire Treetops a well designed luxury camp.
