Mikumi National Park

PDF Print E-mail
With its 3230 km2 Mikumi is a national park since 1964. There you will be lucky to see some African hunting dogs, one of Africa’s rarest mammals.

The birdlife is profuse and includes red-bills oxpeckers, marabou storks and the turquoise and blue lilac-breasted roller.

Mikumi National Park can be visited all year round but many of the park roads become slippery or impassable during the long rains (end of March – May) and sometime during the short rains (Nov. – Dec.).

The best concentration of wildlife is between December and March but animals are most easily seen from mid-August to the end of October.

The best time for visiting is in the dry months between June to February. Vuma Hills Tented Camp remains open all year round, but access to some areas of the park may be limited during March to June, due to the rains. Birdlife during this time of year is glorious and compensates for the scarcer viewings of game animals.
