Connecting Dar es Salaam - Selous Game Reserve - Udzungwa and Mikumi National Parks The Safari Express Train is an ideal way to travel in Southern Tanzania; not only is it comfortable and relaxing (with a bar and meal served on board), but you actually see a great deal of the stunningly beautiful Tanzanian countryside that would otherwise be missed. The railway track runs along the northern boundary of the Selous Game Reserve before reaching the Kilombero Valley, so a couple of hours game viewing are included on the trip!! The Safari Express Train runs on the Great Uhuru Railway or, as it is better known, the Tazara Railway. This railway was built by the Chinese between 1970 and 1975 and is an impressive feat of engineering. The track runs for 1870 km from Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Moshi in Zambia, and to get there passes over 300 bridges, through 23 tunnels and past 147 stations. At a cost of US$230 million this was the largest railway project since the 2nd world War. The Safari Express is not just a carriage added to the public train; the whole train schedule is operated by Foxes of Africa. The passenger carriage aims to recreate the bygone days in terms of style and comfort, with good views for all passengers. As many passengers will have been travelling prior to boarding the train, there is a shower as well as normal toilet facilities. A freshly prepared meal will be served on board and a bar is open at all times. The trip from Dar es Salaam up to Udzungwa and Mikumi travels along the Coastal strip through villages and towns before diverting inland along the northern border of the Selous Game Reserve. During the safari you will have planty of time to really absorb the landscape, scenery and wildlife that you see en route. After the game reserve the train will continue through the Kilombero Valley before arriving at it's destination at Udzungwa. From here it is an hours transfer by road to the accommodation at either Foxes Safari Camp or Vuma Hills Tented Camp in Mikumi National Park .
